Ben Colbran founded Baroida Estate in 1965 when the government of Papua New Guinea began encouraging the settlers of the area to grow coffee as a sustainable crop with long-term potential. Successive members of the family have managed the farm, which sits between 1600 and 1850 meters above sea level. In 2005 Chris, Ben’s grandson, moved back to the farm to oversee several projects, but it wasn’t until 2010 that the quality of the coffee as truly discovered by the outside world. In that year the family began exporting their own coffee – not allowing it to be blended – and took the process into their own hands, thereby allowing the uniqueness of the origin to be expressed.

What do New York City and Caranavi, Bolivia have in common? We can name two things - family-run, quality-obsessed coffee businesses, and long lines of taxis. This sweet Bolivian brew began its life on the family farms of San Ignacio’s indigenous farmers. It wouldn’t be so delicious if it wasn’t carefully processed by Pedro Rodriguez and his son at their Buenavista Mill. And our friends at Joe in New York City -- another family business -- roasted these beans just for us. So this one is family through and through. How do the beans make their way from mountainside farms to Buenavista? In a strategy near and dear to our hearts, the Rodriguez family employs a fleet of local taxis to make that commute. As any New Yorker will tell you - sometimes cabbing it is the only way.

It's thanks to his family that Wilmar Guarnizo got into coffee farming in the first place. When Wilmar inherited Finca La Vega from his father in 2002, there wasn't a coffee tree in sight. But Wilmar's brothers had experience and success growing coffee, so he decided to follow their lead and plant some trees of his own. Since then, Wilmar has become an expert producer of top-notch coffee. These beans, roasted by family-run Joe, make a brew that's anything but familiar – cranberry and apple acidity cuddles up under a silky body with flavors of cashew and golden delicious for a velvety smooth cup that, like any good family gathering, leaves you comforted and restored.
